Sponge iron (DRI)

Direct reduced iron, known in India as sponge iron: iron ore reduced in the solid state in a coal-fired rotary kiln, without melting. It is sized lump and pellet, part metallic iron and part unreduced oxide, and it is graded by its degree of metallisation.

Grade / purity
Metallisation 88 to 90.5%
Form
Lumps and pellets, 3 to 20 mm

Applications

Sponge iron pellets

Induction furnace

The mainstay charge in India’s induction melting shops, blended with scrap.

Electric arc furnace

A low-residual charge that dilutes the tramp elements scrap brings in.

Billets and re-rolling

Melted with scrap into billets for bar, rod and section mills.
